The big winner at Lake Cayuga was angler Bob Salotti of Geneva, New York. Salotti expertly finessed 18 pounds, 15 ounces worth of bass into his fishing boat. His fishing talents earned him well over $5,000 in prize money and the admiration of his peers. The Lake Cayuga tournament's remaining top five spots were captured by New Yorkers Kevin Bishop, Woody Henyan, Jamie Hartman and Cory Baright.

Rend Lake Results

Rend Lake in Benton, Illinois, was also the site of a Walmart Bass Fishing League event on Saturday. During the fishing tournament, bass angler Brad Porter proved unbeatable. Sea fishermen enjoy a successful weekend

IT was a busy weekend for sea anglers fishing at the Channel Tunnel's Samphire Hoe coastal park, with the Home International Team Championship taking place from the outer wall, writes Alan Yates.

The England youngsters won the day, showing the seniors how to fish this difficult venue. Both the junior and the youth teams took the gold medal, while the seniors finished joint last out of the four nations.

The event was marred by a casting accident when one of the Scottish youth team was hit by a lead weight that broke from another angler's line.

Fortunately he was not seriously hurt and he returned to finish fishing.

The other event fished on Samphire Hoe was the European Federation Championships and that produced a rare giant three-bearded rockling for winner Reg Clough of Dorset.

Reg was so excited by his unusual catch he returned it without measuring it in the catch, measure and release competition.

LOCAL club anglers have been busy with a host of evening competitions fished from Shepway venues.

The latest Folkestone Sea Angling Association beach event saw Folkestone angler Lee Heaver win thanks to a bonus smoothhound he hooked at Sandgate beach.

Lee's hound weighed 2kg and took his total weight to 8.52kg. Second was Martyn Reid and third Ray Coyne.

At the Fountain Angling Club's event, Sandgate also proved the hot spot to fish with John Wells, of Hythe, topping the weights with 6.552kg. Second was Julian Bausola and third Michael Warne.

Dungeness Angling Association fished their latest late night competition at a crowded Dungeness Point.

Winner was Jim McMurray, of Folkestone, with 9lb 11.5oz. Second was Cieron Bull, of Hythe, with 7lb 13oz and third Matt Sommerfield with 6lb.

The Dungeness Association's next event is at Dungeness on July 21, fishing 7pm to midnight. Meet at Gate will be between 5pm and 6pm.

Other sea results include the latest Ashford Sea Match Group competition fished at Sandgate and that was won by Dean Graham, of Ashford, with dogfish and whiting for 3.58kg.

The Seabrook Sea Anglers fished from the boats in their latest event and that was won by Dave Gray with 29 points.

Freshwater match results include the conclusion of the Cinque Ports Angling Society's Willing Cup at Beachborough Lake. Match winner was Colin Conroy and overall win went to Chris Shield of Dover

The CPAS also fished their all night competition at Beachborough lakes and the winner was Grant Turner of Ashford with 23.830kg.

Folkestone and Shepway Angling Club are holding a members match this Sunday at Radnor Park. The Peter Mead float-only competition has its draw at 9am and fishing is 10am until 4pm.

State: Free Fishing Weekend June 2-3

“Free fishing weekend is a great opportunity for adults and kids alike to experience the great outdoors,” said Fish and Game Commissioner Mary Griffin.

Officials at the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game are encouraging residents to go fishing this weekend to take advantage of the annual free fishing weekend, when anglers aren’t required to purchase freshwater or saltwater fishing permits to fish in any of the Commonwealth’s fresh or saltwater waterways.

“Free fishing weekend is a great opportunity for adults and kids alike to experience the great outdoors and enjoy the multitude of fishing opportunities here in Massachusetts,” said Commissioner Mary Griffin in a press release. “We especially encourage people who have not tried fishing before to try something new or those who haven’t fished in a long time to take up the hobby again.”

Framingham residents consider visiting Cochituate State Park in Natick to fish this weekend. You could also try fishing at Farm Pond.

Click here for a list of fishing spots.

Adults wishing to fish recreationally in state marine waters beyond this weekend are required to possess a Massachusetts recreational saltwater fishing permit – unless fishing under the authority of a recreational license from New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Connecticut.

Information about Massachusetts recreational fishing license requirements for fresh and salt water is found at: http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/licensing/index.htm.

The purchase of a recreational saltwater or freshwater fishing permit directly funds improvements to fishing access projects and other programs that support recreational fishing and fishing management and research efforts across the state.

The state has offered the free fishing weekend annually since 1986.
