Berkley® Havoc™ Cast For Cash Huge Success For Lousiana Man

COLUMBIA, S.C.- Jerry Brandon didn't expect to personally meet Hank Parker for a backstage casting lesson, and certainly never expected to have the opportunity to cast for a $100,000. The Haughton, La., AT&T worker was randomly selected from a packed CenturyLink Center crowd to test his casting skills in the Berkley Havoc Cast for Cash contest at the final weigh in.

Although Brandon's attempt at the $100,000 fell just short, he was given a second shot at the target for $25,000. This attempt just missed the mark once again, but Brandon didn't go home without. For his effort Berkley awarded him $5,000.

"The Berkley Havoc Cast for Cash was a tremendous success," said Andrew Marks, Berkley Marketing Director. "Jerry was a great contestant and was really close on both attempts. I think I was sweating a bit more than he was. He had a great practice session with Hank Parker backstage and was really confident using the gear. Berkley Havoc is proud to sponsor the event and look forward to next year in Tulsa, Oklahoma."

Brandon chose an Abu Garcia Revo S baitcast reel/Abu Garcia Veritas rod spooled with 12lb. Trilene XL for his $100,000 cast. Hank Parker, legendary Bass angler, was on hand to provide one-on-one assistance and casting tips, ensuring Brandon had the best chance to win the cash prize.

"To be honest, I didn't realize what I was chosen for," said Brandon. "I haven't fished in a while, but I hit the water anytime I can. It was pretty exciting coming out onto the Classic floor. It made the casting a little bit more difficult because of the huge crowd."

Walmart FLW Tour Field Eyes Lake Hartwell For First Major Of Season

ANDERSON, S.C.- The last time FLW Tour anglers visited Lake Hartwell, there were more than a few who found fish spawning. Oklahoma angler Jason Christie found what he called "Oklahoma" water in that 2011 event - shallow, dirty water that suits his style of fishing - and targeted staging and spawning fish for a total of 70 pounds, 11 ounces. But fishing fans looking for a repeat performance from Lake Hartwell in March may find different circumstances resulting in an exciting shootout of the world's best pros.

The Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Hartwell presented by Folgers will visit Anderson/Greenville, S.C., March 8-11 for the first major of its 17th season. Hosted by the Anderson Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Greenville Convention & Visitors Bureau, the tournament will feature a full field of the world's best bass pros and co-anglers casting for top awards up to $125,000 cash in the Pro Division and up to $25,000 cash in the Co-angler Division.

"I think (fishing's) going to be a lot different this year," said Folgers pro Scott Suggs of Bryant, Ark. "Last year (the fish) had moved up and got on beds, but I don't think they're going to be up that far this go-round. It's going to be more of a pre-spawn type deal."

The 2007 Forrest Wood Cup winner said anglers will have a wide variety of techniques to employ at the Hartwell event and anglers will be able to play to their strengths.

"They're going to catch them cranking, on (Sworming Hornet) Fish Head Spins and jerkbaits," Suggs said. "And then the (anglers) who are going to stay in the creeks are going to be throwing jigs, chatterbaits and spinnerbaits.

"Luckily the lake's big enough that we'll be able to get away from each other quite a bit," Suggs added.

Suggs said he believes it could take 16 pounds a day during the four-day event to take home the trophy.

"If those big females move up and get in there somewhere and get to staging adjacent to flats it may even be better than that because you'll catch some that haven't spawned out yet," Suggs said. "The weights could be even better."

In FLW Tour competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. This year's Cup will be in Duluth/Gainesville, Ga., Aug. 9-12 on Lake Lanier and anglers could win as much as $500,000 - the sport's biggest award. Anglers are also vying for the prestigious 2012 Walmart FLW Tour Angler of the Year presented by Kellogg's title that will be determined by the most points accumulated over the six Tour Majors.

Anglers will take off from Portman Shoals Marina located at 1629 Marina Road in Anderson at 7 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning and at 7:30 a.m. DST Sunday morning (Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday). Thursday and Friday's weigh-ins will be held at Portman Shoals Marina beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's final weigh-ins will be held at the TD Convention Center located at One Exposition Drive in Greenville beginning at 4 p.m.

Fans will be treated to the FLW Outdoors Expo at the TD Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday from noon - 4 p.m. prior to the final weigh-ins. The Expo includes Ranger boat simulators, the opportunity to interact with professional anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by sponsors, and fans can learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities. All activities are free and open to the public. On Saturday the first 300 children 14 and under who are accompanied by an adult will receive a free rod and reel combo courtesy of The Greenville News. On Sunday one lucky fishing fan will win a Can-Am ATV courtesy of WESC 92.5. The ATV giveaway is free to enter but the winner must be present at the conclusion of Sunday's final weigh-in to win.

As part of the FLW Tour's community outreach initiative, select FLW Tour anglers will be volunteering at Homes of Hope located at 3 Dunean St. in Greenville from 9-11:30 a.m. March 7. FLW Tour anglers will be assisting Homes of Hope interns in building porch rails at Homes of Hope for the new LoCAL home project. FLW will also be donating 50 three-pound cans of Folgers Coffee and boxes of 3M Blue Painters tape at 11 a.m. following the anglers' volunteer efforts.

Coverage of the Lake Hartwell tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network when "FLW" airs April 15 from 1 - 2 p.m. ET. "FLW" is hosted by Jason Harper and is broadcast to more than 559 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

Captain Quinton Dieterle And Team Get Lit Win Silver Sailfish Derby

COLUMBIA, S.C. - One of the most storied and prestigious sailfish tournaments concluded this past weekend with Get Lit, owned by Miami angler Kit Toomey and Captained by Quinton Dieterle, bringing home the victory. Get Lit was able to fish their way to a first place finish at the West Palm Beach Fishing Club's 75th Annual Silver Sailfish Derby in West Palm Beach, Fla.

This marks the second year in a row that Get Lit has captured the title, releasing 58 sailfish. Get Lit also set a new one-day boat record, releasing 36 sailfish. The team was using 20-pound Berkley® ProSpec™ premium monofilament spooled on Penn® 16VS Custom International reels.

"This is by far one of my favorite events to fish," said Toomey. "The turnout to watch this event is off the charts, and the fishing this time of year is unbelievable. Get Lit was able to catch and release 58 sailfish for this win, and I attribute the success to the entire team along with great sponsors. Get Lit is proud to fish the toughest gear on the market, and that is the only stuff we use. PENN gets the job done."

The Silver Sailfish Derby is the oldest Sailfish Tournament on the East Coast of the United States and is regarded as one of the most prestigious among the anglers. There were 46 boats in the field and a combined 1,000 plus sails were caught and released.

Braided line ready, the Penn International series gives the saltwater angler Dura-Drag washer that virtually eliminate hesitation, even under the strain that braided lines put on a reel. Equipped with a patented Quick Shift two-speed system, the Penn International V easily shifts into high or low gear. Four ball bearings give the angler the smoothest performance in saltwater. Penn International Reels are available in five sizes - 16VS, 30VSW, 50VSW, 70 VS and 80 VSW - to accommodate any saltwater fish.

Berkley ProSpec is a premium co-polymer monofilament built on performance. Saltwater anglers are tough on their line and ProSpec delivers the toughness and strength that serious anglers need. With excellent know and impact strength, the supple ProSpec is available in Ocean Blue and Fluorescent Yellow. The line comes in 12-, 16-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 40-, 50-, 60-, 80-, 100- and 130-pound test. This is the line captains and guides depend upon to get the job done.

Three New VT State Record Fish Caught in 2011

The waters of Vermont continue to prove just how productive they can be for the trophy angler. In 2011, three new state records were established for burbot, pumpkinseed sunfish and white sucker.

In February 2011, Patrick Woodward caught the first state record fish of the year, a 5.63-pound Burbot from Lake Champlain.

In April, Brian Cadoret caught a 5.32-pound white sucker, only to have that record broken days later by Drew Price, who caught and entered a 6.34-pound fish. Both fish were caught from the same location - a small brook flowing into Lake Dunmore.

A similar situation occurred later in the summer of 2011, when the pumpkinseed sunfish record was broken twice in a short period. In August, Sylvia Beaudoin entered a 1.01-pound pumpkinseed, besting the previous record of 0.98-pounds set in 2010. However, Sylvia's record lasted only a week, until Michael Peet caught a pumpkinseed weighing in at 1.02-pounds. Both sunfish were caught in Lake Champlain.

These are just the latest records to be set in a decade marked by record breaking fish catches in Vermont. Of the 33 fish species eligible for state record consideration, 15 records have been set since 2001, with five of them coming since 2010. No other state in the region can boast this many new state record fish over the same time period.

Many other large fish were caught that didn't break previous records.

"The new Master Angler Program we started in 2010 has really been a showcase for the phenomenal fishing we have all across the state," said department fisheries biologist Shawn Good. "There really are some exceptional fish being caught by anglers all over Vermont."

Good pointed to a Master Angler entry from 2011 for a yellow perch exceeding the 2-pound mark as evidence. "This is the first time in over 30 years that the catch of yellow perch over 2 pounds has been officially recorded by the department." The fish, weighing 2.08-pounds was caught through the ice on Caspian Lake by Dylan Smith in February 2011.

The forecast for 2012 looks just as promising - a new potential state record burbot was caught in Lake Champlain just last week, weighing in at 8.81-pounds, more than three pounds heavier than the record burbot submitted a year ago. The new record will not be officially recognized until the appropriate paperwork has been filed by the angler and reviewed by department officials.

These new state records are a testament to the great quality and diversity of fishing opportunities available to anglers in Vermont, so get out there and fish with your family and friends. You never know...you could set the next state record!
